As Kenyans start 2024, many await President William Ruto’s promise of ‘free medical care’ in all public hospitals for those unable to pay KSH. 300 for NHIF cover.
Speaking during a church service in Sotik, Bomet County on 19 November 2023, President Ruto said not only was the Government going to lower cost of the cover from KSH. 500 to KSH. 300, but also cater for bills of ‘poor Kenyans’ unable to pay for the cover, which has since been replaced by the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
“From January, we will reduce NHIF, the one you pay KSH. 500 will now cost KSH. 300. Those unable to pay the KSH. 300, the Government of Kenya will pay for you because we will be able to determine the financial ability of every Kenyan.
Every Kenyan will be able to go to a hospital, be treated and released to go home without being asked for any money, because we want to make sure Kenya is a country of equality,”
President Ruto
As of Monday 01 January, no record had been made in regards to the above promise by the President, amid a court order blocking implementation of Ruto’s SHIF.
