It’s official, the much anticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will not be aired on Multichoice sports network SuperSport, after the company failed to secure rights to broadcast the tournament. A statement from Multichoice seen by BRK however says the matches will be available on its Free To Air (FTA) platforms.
Multichoice lost the bid after the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) concluded a historic Media Rights Agreement with Togo based Pan-African broadcaster, New World TV. Several global broadcasters and agencies took part in the highly competitive tender process for CAF Media Rights which was ultimately awarded to New World TV.
New World TV has previously acquired major sporting rights including the pay-TV rights across Sub-Saharan Africa for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
AFCON will kick off on 13 January with hosts Ivory Coast taking on Guinea-Bissau. Other eagerly awaited clashes include Egypt V Ghana on 18 January and defending champions Senegal V Cameroon a day later.
PS: The AFCON 2023 was initially scheduled between June and July 2023, but to avoid a rainy season in Ivory Coast, the tournament was shifted to this year between Saturday 13 January and Sunday, 11 February, while retaining its name; AFCON 2023.
