Nurses at the trending Port Victoria Sub-County Hospital have paralyzed normal operations in the facility after they downed tools on Friday to protest a dramatic attack meted on one of them by a lady earlier this week.
Locals were forced to seek alternatives, some transferring their patients to other hospitals as there was no nurses in sight to attend to them.
“There is no work going on here until we’re assured of the security of healthcare workers. And if that does not happen in the shortest time possible, we will withdraw all healthcare workers in Busia County government within 48 hours,” Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary General Seth Panyako has said.
The harassed nurse has since recorded a statement with the police, seeking protection and asking for justice after being verbally attacked by Vanessa Ogema, a student at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital College.
It has also been established that during the dramatic attack, property was destroyed in the process, including stationery and an oxygen concentrator.
Vanessa’s school on Thursday also initiated investigations into the matter to gather all relevant information which will aid in taking appropriate action in line with the institution’s policies and procedures.
