John Matara, 34, the main suspect in the gruesome murder of socialite Starlet Wahu Mwangi, 26, is an alumnus of Butere Boys High School. While it remains unclear when he sat for his KCSE National Examinations, among the renowned personalities the alleged serial killer schooled with at the institution include celebrated comedian Eddie Butita.

According to a social media post on X seen by BRK, comedian Butita has expressed shock after finding out that he attended the same school with the murder suspect who is now being linked to multiple sexual crimes and torture of women he allegedly lures from dating sites.

Currently, John Matara is being accused of killing Starlet Wahu, an Instagram socialite who was found in a pool of blood mid last week inside a rented AirBnb apartment in Nairobi. She had spent the night with the suspect who is currently being detained by the police after being arrested at Mbagathi hospital, where he was receiving treatment for stab wounds.

Wahu’s body was discovered Thursday morning at a 4th floor AirBnB room Y32 of Papino Apartments located in Nairobi’s South B, after the watchman reported seeing the male suspect flee with bloodstained clothes.

Examination of the body revealed a stab wound on the head near the left ear, a deep cut on the right thigh and a human bite on the left arm. Broken glasses and splattered blood throughout the room evidenced a moment of life and death struggle.

Among the items that were retrieved from the scene of crime included a used HIV testing kit, a used condom, sticks of weed, liquor, Wahu’s clothes and inner wears, the police saying the model and her killer must have engaged in intimacy before the fatal incident.

Following the incident that has received national attention, at least two additional female victims of John Matara’s gory actions have recorded statements with the police. On Sunday, detectives derived from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) appealed to any victims and survivors of the suspect’s animosity, to formally report their ordeals at Regional Criminal Investigations Office in Nairobi or the nearest police station.

According to a police report, investigations currently point to a possible serial sexual offender who thrives on blackmail to his victims, and who may be part of a criminal ring that targets women on dating sites and other social media Apps.

“The DCI commits to painstakingly investigate this brutal murder of such a young Kenyan, and at the same time caution members of the public to beware of such felons in the guise of lovers, who promise heaven but unleash hell on those who fall for their plot,” reads part of the report.

John Matara is currently being detained at the Industrial Area Police Station for the next 21 days as detectives continue to investigate the matter.
