Four women are nursing injuries after being attacked by a hyena as they picked tea in their farms. Locals are now piling pressure on Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to locate the wild animal and capture it before it does more harm.
“This thing is causing us sleepless nights here. We are now even scared of letting our children go to school early in the morning because even adults are afraid of walking outside.
It is a shame that KWS told people to talk to a hyena if it attacks you. Is it a police officer that you can negotiate with? KWS don’t know hyenas in Mt. Kenya region,” a local said while addressing media on Thursday afternoon.
Despite an electric fence surrounding the Mt. Kenya Forest Reserve, wild animals are common outside the reserve in nearby villages, locals faulting KWS’ laxity in capturing them.
