Catholic Bishops in Africa have declined to approve Pope Francis’ call of blessing same-sex marriages. They argue that LGBTQ practice is not appropriate in the continent and it further contradicts the cultural ethos of African communities.
Late 2023, Pope Francis asked Catholic Bishops all over the world to bless same-sex marriages, a statement that was received by extreme mixed reactions globally.
On Thursday, Catholic Bishops in Africa condemned the Pope’s statement, given that homosexuality is yet to be globally embraced by most governments and churches.
“The church’s doctrine on Christian marriage remains unchanged, it is between man and woman, and no any other way. For this reason, we the African Bishops, do not consider it appropriate for us to bless homosexual unions or same-sex marriages,” reads part of a statement from SECAM, a body that represents Catholic Bishops in Africa.
