    Kenya Railways, KPLC, NTSA, KRA, among top loss-makers in 2023.

    A report from Treasury has listed at least 20 state agencies whose losses crossed the KSH. 1B mark in 2023, highlighting their increasing budget on taxpayers.

    Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) topped the list with a loss of KSH. 33.56B in the review period, followed by the Roads Annuity Fund at KSH. 12.8B. The Kenyatta National Hospital was third with a loss of KSH. 3.52B.

    Below are the top 10 agencies from the listed 22, according to the report.

    1. Kenya Railways Corporation – KSH. 33.56B
    2. Roads Annuity Fund – KSH. 12.81B
    3. Kenyatta National Hospital – KSH. 3.52B
    4. Kenya Power (KPLC) – KSH. 3.41B
    5. Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) – KSH. 3.13B
    6. KeNHA Levy Fund – KSH. 3.09B
    7. Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) – KSH. 2.48B
    8. East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC) – KSH. 2.37B
    9. Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) – KSH. 2.33B
    10. National Transport & Safety Authority (NTSA) – KSH. 2.3B
    11. Road Maintenance Levy Fund – KSH. 2.12B
    12. Kenyatta University (KU) – KSH. 2.01B
    13. National Irrigation Authority – KSH. 1.88B
    14. National Cereals & Produce Board (NCPB) – KSH. 1.76B
    15. Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) – KSH. 1.62B
    16. New KCC – KSH. 1.39B
    17. Kenya Wildlife Service – KSH. 1.39B
    18. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) – KSH. 1.12B
    19. Tanathi Water Works Development Agency – KSH. 1.09B
    20. Uiversity of Nairobi (UoN) – KSH. 1.05B

    From the Treasury report, most of the above state agencies have been relying on bail outs, pushing the Government to seek alternatives to make them profitable, including privatization.
