The Nigeria High Commission (NHC) has issued an advisory following a wave of gruesome Airbnb killings that has recently left two young women dead.
According to a statement seen by BRK, the NHC is concerned by Kenyans on social media and local media linking of the murders to Nigerians.
“The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Nairobi is concerned by the preponderance of online blogs, doctored videos and social media posts, maliciously entrenching a spurious speculation that ‘Nigerians’ have perpetrated these heinous crimes,” reads part of the statement.
The Commission has further urged all Nigerians in Kenya to remain calm and to continue to be law-abiding and respectable members of the public.
“However, Nigerians are advised to be vigilant and to avoid unnecessary movements even as investigations are ongoing and formal communication from the host law enforcement authorities are awaited,” the statement reads.
The communication also appeals to members of the public to refrain from disinformation and making misleading statements, warns peddlers of incorrect information targeting Nigerians that action could be taken against them.
“The High Commission is also taking proper note of the channels through which such disinformation is being shared and would like to assure that necessary action, within the scope of international law and extant legal provisions of the host authorities will be involved as appropriate.” the Commission says.
