The Government has issued mandatory directives to all operators of short-term accommodation facilities, including Airbnbs, which must be put in place by 5 February 2024.
A statement from the Interior Ministry seen by BRK directs that all Airbnbs in the country must now register with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) effective immediately.
The registration process is aimed at ensuring all accommodation facilities meet the highest standards of safety and security of guests.
In addition, security personnel attached to such premises are now legally allowed to withhold identification documents belonging to guests accessing the facilities for the entire stay period.
Further, CCTV footages have to be up-to date with most recent recordings.
A nationwide crackdown will be launched on 5 February to ensure compliance, the statement warns.
“We will subsequently coordinate with booking platforms to restrict unregistered rentals and further institute severe penalties, including fines and revocation in cases of non-compliance,” the statement reads in part.
The above are measures being introduced to safeguard the lives of those using such establishments in the wake of femicide wave in the country, the Interior Ministry says.
