Water hyacinth returns to Lake Victoria.
From satellite images obtained by Kenya Marine Fisheries and Research Institute , the hyacinth is currently covering most bays of the lake including Nyakach and Winam Gulf in Kisumu County, Asembo Bay in Siaya County and Kendu Bay in Homa Bay County.
The reemergence of the water weed has posed a threat to livelihoods that depend on the fresh water body.
Normally, the plant floats on water and moves depending on wind direction which in many cases blows the dense weed towards the shores.
