Apple has warned iPhone users against dipping their waterlogged phones in uncooked rice in a bid to dry them, saying this method is likely to cause more harm to your iPhone.
In its latest advisory, Apple says when you get the liquid detection alert on your iPhone, don’t put your iPhone in rice, “Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” it says.
Further, Apple asks users to avoid using external heat sources like hair dryers to blow off liquid or even inserting cotton swabs or paper towels into charging ports.
While offering safe tips, Apple says when you get a “Liquid Detected” on your iPhones, tap your phone against your hand with the connector pointing down to remove excess water from it.
“Then, just leave it in an area with good airflow to dry and wait for at least 30 minutes before charging it. If the alert still pops up, leave the phone for another few minutes and just wait. It can take up to 24 hours to really get dry,” the company says.
Apple adds that a wireless charger can be used to charge your iPhone, but make sure the back of your iPhone is dry before you place it on your Qi-certified charger.
It warns that charging your iPhone while the lightning or USB-C connector is wet can corrode its connection and cause permanent damage.
However, Apple also advices that users with latest iPhones may not have much to worry as the devices can withstand immersion of up to 20 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.
