Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirms world record-breaking marathoner Kelvin Kiptum died from head injuries, attributing the injuries to a ghastly accident which also claimed the life of Kiptum’s Rwandese coach.
“Upon completing the postmortem, the findings are that the late Kelvin Kiptum had severe head injuries. There were severe skull fractures which were mainly at the base of the spine.
The spinal cord had intruded into the cranial cavity because of the fractures,” Dr. Oduor has told the media, Wednesday afternoon.
The autopsy report further reveals that Kiptum suffered injuries on his ribs with visible fractures on the first, second and third ribs on his left side while on the right side, a total of five ribs were affected.
Further toxicological screening is being done on samples taken to ascertain any substance in Kiptum’s system that might have led to the fatal accident.
Kiptum will be accorded a state-burial this Friday, 23 February.
