Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has ordered the closure of all wines and spirits shops and mini bars located in bus and matatu terminals within the city.
Operators of the aforementioned businesses have been given seven days to comply.
The directive has been announced during a meeting with multiple stakeholders in the transport industry including National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Matatu Owners Association (MOA).
Sakaja says the move is a step towards keeping motorists sober and combat accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcoholic substances, adding that he is concerned about the number of people dying from such accidents.
According to the Governor, most PSV drivers and conductors as they wait for passengers, sneak into such joints to quench their alcoholic thirsts, thereby posing a risk while on the road.
