The National Police Service through its Inspector General Japhet Kome, has faulted Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru for headlining registration of liquor stores and bars in the region.
IG Koome claims should the process be devolved, it’s likely to be politicized and transformed into a vote-hunting and campaign tool.
He has therefore pleaded with the Government to allow the National Police Service do the licensing.
“This is a security matter. Our people are dying. The truth of the matter is when a Governor headlines such a process, what they are looking for is a campaign platform and votes.
I’d like to request you Excellency, let the law be changed so that licensing is done by the police,” – IG Koome.
Waiguru’s move comes after at least a dozen people died after consuming an illicit brew in Kirinyaga County, thereby, leading to closure of all bars and licensing done afresh, an ongoing process.
