The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) have issued three demands to the Government following Thursday’s assault of union’s Sec Gen Dr. Davji Atellah.
Dr. Atellah was allegedly hit by a teargas canister on the head, leaving him nursing serious injuries in a Nairobi hospital, where he is still admitted. He was part of a peaceful match in protest of Government’s failure to post medical interns.
The union now wants an apology from the Interior CS, a disciplinary action taken against the officer who fired the canister that hit Dr. Atellah and immediate posting of medical interns.
Should the Government fail to comply with the above demands within 24 hours, the union has vowed to withdraw its services effective midnight 1 March, commence national protests on Monday, initiate private prosecution against the rogue officer and put on hold medical services provision to members of the National Police Service.
“To the evil men and women who think that by harming the union leaders they shall be cowed, we want to tell them that the idea of a better healthcare in Kenya is bigger than Dr. Davji Atellah and his comrades. They will have to kill us all!” reads part of the KMPDU statement seen by BRK.
