From Saturday, 2 March, photos of alleged currencies for East Africa Community member states began circulating on social media, multiple media platforms reporting the introduction of the ‘Federal Republic of East Africa Sheafra’.
It has been established that the information is false and EAC is yet to conclude its journey to having a common currency for its member states.
An official statement from EAC seen by BRK confirms the community is not in any way associated with the circulating photos.
“The EAC Secretariat wishes to inform all our stakeholders that the Partner States’ journey to a single currency is still a work in progress.
Kindly ignore any rumors circulating in social media on the unveiling of new banknotes for the region,” – EAC.
