John Thiong’o, a Super Metro driver accused of endangering the lives of passengers & other road users by making a U-turn in the middle of Thika Superhighway and driving into oncoming traffic on Monday morning, has been released on a KSh. 1M bond with an alternative of KSh. 300,000 cash bail.
Mr. Thiong’o was charged at the Milimani Law Court, a day after being arrested following the incident, together with the vehicle’s conductor. Super Metro management willingly handed him to the police.
Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo heard that after Thiong’o made the sudden u-turn, passengers started screaming as oncoming traffic swerved to avoid head-on collision with the matatu.
The driver was charged with endangering the lives of the passengers, drunk-driving after taking an alco-blow test, failing to take reasonable care in public and causing obstruction in a busy highway, charges he all denied. The case is pending hearing and determination.
