A parent at St. George’s Girls’ Secondary School in Nairobi has dragged the learning institution to court over ‘illegal charges and levies’. The charges highlighted, sum to at least KSh. 22,000, in addition to the already paid KSh. 40,000 tuition fees.
According to the suit, after the half-term break which ended early this week, students were allegedly asked to report back with a KSh. 5,000 remedial fee before they could be allowed back in class.
In addition, a KSh. 2,210 has been listed as replacement for textbooks, KSh. 8,000 for a dorm project, KSh. 5,000 budget deficit and another KSh. 2,000 for an ICT fund, a total of KSh. 22,210.
The parent wants the levies declared illegal, saying the school’s management has remained tight-lipped when tasked to explain the aforementioned charges.
The parent further reveals that most of the payments are made via MPESA and no official receipt is issued. A Nairobi court has since marked the issue as urgent and set 15 April as the mentioning date and for further directions.
