Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, has been elected as Mexico’s first woman president in a historic landslide win. Preliminary results show the former mayor’s win is between 58% and 60% of the vote in Sunday’s election.
Her irreversible lead is about 30% ahead of her main rival, also a woman, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez. Ms. Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“This is not my win; this is a win for women not only in Mexico but all over the world. I’ve said it from the start that this is about all of us getting to the top. I won’t fail you,” she has said in an early win-speech.
