The national carrier, Kenya Airways, has extended the suspension of a complementary scheme that entitles its staff to two free flights per year, each accompanied by up to four other passengers. The four are to be nominated within a set of accompanying rules, and they are derived from either the employee’s family or friends.
The airline suspended the incentive in April, saying multiple staff were abusing it and grossly violating the ‘Buddy Pass’ policies. The suspension was to allow KQ to launch an investigation into the claims between then and May 31, when the suspension was to be lifted. The date has since been revised to allow for the completion of the investigation.
According to an internal communication sent to staff and seen by BRK, KQ has notified staff that ‘the scheme remains suspended for a few more days.’ Further, a highly placed source at the airline says those found guilty of violating the scheme’s policies are or will be dismissed from the airline over gross misconduct.
Among the key violations being investigated are KQ staff commercially benefiting from the scheme through pocketing ticket values for the provided limit of four passengers.
