A truck driver has been fined KSH. 46.9M for overloading, in line with the East Africa Community Vehicle Load Act, 2016.
According to KeNHA Senior official Eng. Kennedy Ndugire, the truck which was carrying sand had exceeded the required load of 54,000kgs.
“Upon weighing, it was found to be carrying a gross weight of 83,940kgs, an overload of 29,940kgs, which attracts a KSH. 46,898,693 fine under the East Africa Community Vehicle Load Act, 2016,” says Eng. Ndugire.
Once the lorry was flagged by KeNHA officials, the driver tried speeding off but was cornered, an incident that led to the truck hitting an oncoming vehicle.
In addition, the truck will now attract a parking fee of $50 (approx. KSH. 8,000) per day until the fine is paid or as long as it stays at the KeNHA yard.
“The Regional Trunk Road Network stretching from Mombasa to Malaba is protected under the East African Community Vehicle Load Control Act, 2016, which stipulates that an overloaded truck will be charged a fine for excess cargo,” says Eng. Ndugire.
