Chief Justice Martha Koome has announced the death of Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti (L). Ms. Kivuti was shot by Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir (R) during a live court session on Thursday.
“I wish to confirm that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts, has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in court,” CJ Koome has said in an announcement seen by BRK.
The magistrate died at the Nairobi Hospital, where she was transferred for specialized care after the shocking shooting incident at Makadara Law Courts. She sadly passed away last night around 11PM. A close family member says one of the bullets raptured her liver and intestines. Her body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home.
ICYMI: On Thursday, senior cop Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto opened fire on the magistrate after she denied his wife bond in a fraud case involving the officer’s wife. The magistrate had cancelled the bond for the accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond.
“Immediately after this decision was pronounced, the senior officer, in charge of a police station in Londiani in Kisumu, pulled out a gun, shot the magistrate, and injured her on the thigh and abdomen,” the judiciary said in a statement to the media the same day.
The assailant was shot dead on the spot by court security. In the process, three other officers were injured, a police report said. The suspect was in court over a KSh2.9 fraud case and had pleaded to be released on bond, but the magistrate declined. This is after she absconded multiple court sessions over an alleged sickness, and a warrant of arrest was issued against her.
