A Pakistani man is currently in a mental hospital after being stopped from setting up the first gay club in the country where homosexuality has been criminalized.
The man, whose identity has not been released, explained that he filed an application with the deputy commissioner of Abbottabad to establish a gay club, which he tentatively called Lorenzo Gay Club. Further, while being dragged to the mental hospital, he kept shouting that he was setting up the club to struggle for the rights of the most neglected community in Pakistan.
Authorities that arrested him say he is being detained at the mental facility because they don’t understand how someone would think of setting up such a club in Pakistan.
“Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman, or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than two years nor more than ten years, and shall also be liable to a fine,” Pakistani law on gayism reads.
